Librarians, educators and others concerned with creating literature for children in Africa, come and share your ideas about what books we want our children to be reading, what they should look like, how we should get these books to them AND who should make sure that all of this happens!

As was the case for the past two Cape Town Book Fairs, IBBY is opening up a few shelves in the IBBY SA stand to their members! The IBBY SA stand will be up and ready for display in the afternoon of the set-up day, Thursday 29 July at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. For more information, call Robin Malan on 076 169 2789 This offer is open only to paid-up IBBY SA members, and only for books not published by mainstream publishers (whether they have stands at the CTBF or not).

Cape Town Book Fair 2009 - 13-16th June. SCBWI SA will have a stand where SCBWI members can display their work. The aim is to assist South African writers and illustrators to make contact with representatives from international and local publishers coming to the Fair. Cape Town Book Fair

Cape Town Book Fair, 2008 The Publishers Association of South Africa (PASA), and the organisers of the Frankfurt (European) Book Fair will be organising the Third International Book Fair in Cape Town, (June 14-17, 2008). SCBWI SA has already been allocated a stand and we are working with the organisers to plan their “Kids Zone” and the Pin Board area like in 2007. We plan to provide the opportunity for children’s book writers and illustrators (SCBWI SA members only) to display their work and to make contact at our stand with representatives from the international and local publishers who will be coming to the Fair. SCBWI will have a critique session a week before the Book Fair to help our writers and illustrators prepare for the Fair and a Get-together after the Book Fair for feedback and generally book talk. Cape Town Book Fair

SCBWI had a stand at the Cape Town Book Fair where members of SCBWI displayed examples of their work. LeAnne Hardy from Jo'burg was one writer who took advantage of the opportunity to display her books. Other authors included Wendy Hartman and Reviva Schermbrucker. Illustrators also displayed their books as well as examples of their work. Gauteng illustrators whose work was on display included Joan Rankin and Yvette de Beer. Other illustrators who displayed their work included Marjorie van Heerden and Paddy Bouma. The stand was very busy throughout the fair. Many people went through portfolios and looked at the books published by SCBWI members. They took down names of writers and illustrators whose work they could commission. A popular attraction were the beautiful posters for sale. These were done by renowned artists such as Piet Grobler and were snapped up by eager teachers and librarians. The SCBWI stand was next to the IBBY stand which displayed some wonderful examples of South African books. A large number of exciting children's events were also organised. All in all, children's books were prominent at the Cape Town Book Fair.

CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR

SCBWI MEMBERS – A CHANCE TO DISPLAY YOUR BOOKS AND ARTWORK AT THE CAPE TOWN BOOK FAIR The Cape Town Book Fair will be held on 16; 17; 18 & 19 June – for details about the book fair programme and to register as a trade visitor so that you can show your work to publishers during the fair, go to their web site at http://capetownbookfair.com/trade-visitors This year SCBWI South Africa will be having a stand at the book fair. If you are a member of SCBWI you can display your published books, work in progress and your artwork at the stand To have your work displayed send an e-mail to bookings@scbwi.za.org by 31st May 2007 Include your membership no, and when your membership expires. Use CT Book fair 2007 –member in the subject line of your e-mail write - it is important to have the correct subject line. We will send out instructions to respondents at the beginning of June. There will be no fee for displaying your work – however you have to carry all costs to get your work ready & the postage or transport costs to get work to us. We do however retain the right to refuse to display your work if we find it inappropriate, or if the work is not for children. If you are an unpublished author or illustrator you can display your work too – we will have a section for “work in progress” Illustrators – we will have a big V shaped file for your work so people can “page” through to look at illustrators ‘ artwork. In the evenings a screen will be locked over the opening of the stall so your work will be safe. This is an opportunity not to be missed as last year 418 Exhibitors from 36 countries had stands at the Book Fair and the fair was visited by more than 26 000 people and attracted 2000 International Trade Visitors. It placed Africa firmly on the international literary map. As a result of the overwhelming response, this year's fair is more than double the size. So your work can get immense exposure.
