About SCBWI

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, formed in 1971 by a group of Los Angeles based writers for children, is the only international organization to offer a variety of services to people who write, illustrate, or share a vital interest in children’s literature. The SCBWI acts as a network for the exchange of knowledge between writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and others involved with literature for young people. There are currently more than 19,000 members worldwide, in over 70 regions, making it the largest children's writing organization in the world.

Description: Jaco Jacobs (1980) grew up in a small Karoo town, where he fell in love with books at a very young age. His writing career started at school, with his participation in numerous competitions for aspiring writers, and the publication of his first short stories in magazines. At 18 het wrote his first youth novel, Pretpark, which was later published by Human & Rousseau. After school he studied in Bloemfontein, and obtained a B.A. degree in Communication Science, as well as a B.A. (Hons.) degree in Afrikaans and Dutch Literature. After working as a journalist and editor of the youth supplent JIP at the daily newspaper Volksblad, he joined LAPA Publishers as children’s book publisher. He was awarded the Alba Bouwer Prize, the MML Literature Award and the C.P. Hoogenhout Medal, and has won eight ATKV Children’s Book Awards (the only book award in Afrikaans where children get to vote for their favourite books). In 2008, his youth novel, Lemon! was named an IBBY Honour Book. He is also a freelance journalist, columnist and enthusiastic amateur photographer.

Jaco has published more than 40 books for children and young people, including picture books, collections of children’s verse, and non-fiction. He believes humour is one of the essential ingredients in an enjoyable children’s book, and his books, such as My granny is a rock star and Worms in tomato sauce, are characterized by a strong element of fun. ____________________

Workshop: Illustrate and write a Children's book for the Trade Market facilitated by Joan Rankin

Region: Gauteng, South Africa

Dates: Beginning Wednesday 27 May and continuing with three more workshops on dates to be agreed on by participants

Time: 10:00 -12:30

Where: Houghton, Johannesburg

Description: The course will comprise of four hands-on sessions:

1) Background and brainstorming session

2) Writing and illustrating stories

3) Discussion and feedback

4) Finalisation of books

No skills are needed. The emphasis will be on having fun and experimenting. Participants will receive guidance on writing and illustrating for children. These workshops will culminate in each person producing a book to be exhibited at the Exhibition to be held in November at the University of Pretoria and Alliance Francaise.

Joan Rankin’s experience comes from illustrating over forty children's books as well as writing some of them. In 1991 she won South Africa's most prestigious award for children's book illustrations, the Katrine Harries Award, for her illustrations in The Dancing Elephant; Ask for Patricia and The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Description: Writing for children

Reviva Schermbrucker is a freelance writer of children's books, teacher and facilitator. She has presented this course in Cape Town a number of times. This will be the first time she is presenting this course in Johannesburg. (see information about Reviva in the post at http://scbwigauteng.blogspot.com/2007/11/reviva-schermbrucker.html)

The five-session workshop is intended for those who are strongly attracted to writing for young readers but feel in need of some guidance and support. Designed to assist both beginners and more experienced writers in need of a creative injection, the workshop will help you to develop age-appropriate ideas, structure picture book texts and have a shot at writing for the older child (8 to 12). Participants will experience a series of activities that unlock the barriers to discovering the playful, imaginative world of children's books while being introduced to the disciplines of the many genres that fall under its scope. The workshop will include elements of writing, making, looking and reading and participants will be encouraged to develop personal projects. There is no pressure to share one's writing with the group.

Membership in the SCBWI is open to anyone with an active interest in children’s literature or media. We welcome aspiring and published writers and illustrators, librarians, educators, artists, students, dramatists, musicians, filmmakers, and others. A passion for children’s literature is our #1 criterion. Dues are US$75 for the first year and US$60 each renewing year. Full Membership Open to those whose books, articles, poems, stories, illustrations, photographs, films, television or electronic media for children have been commercially published or produced. Professional editors, agents, and publishers are also included in this category. Associate Membership Open to unpublished writers and illustrators of children’s literature or media, and those with a general enthusiasm for the field. Writers or illustrators who have been published in markets other than children's literature (but not in children's literature) would be considered Associate Members.

Aims of SCBWI

To create opportunities for writers & illustrators of children’s books to learn and become well-informed about the industry we work in, locally and internationally.

To provide opportunities for writers & illustrators to communicate regularly with peers, to compare notes and not only to work in creative isolation. To share with and to learn from each other. In a sense, to create a community of children’s book writers and illustrators.

To stress and strategise with members around the importance of managing the workload in order to set aside time and energy specifically to pursue creative stimulation and to develop creativity and personal development.

To provide opportunities for members to compare notes about career planning and management (also to balance a contribution to educational work with freely creative work (trade books) without losing the creative spark).

To provide opportunities for members to make contact and to interact with established and successful children’s book writers and illustrators, local and foreign.
