had an exhibition of original work that included the wonderfully evocative spreads from her Crystal Kite award-winning book The Kite’s Flight. Maja and fellow SCBWI member Rico (Madam and Eve) Schacherl hosted fun illustration workshops for children aged 5 – 9 years, and an amazing wealth of creative talent was discovered. William Gumede, author of The Kite’s Flight (published by Jacana), read his story of the kite that travels the length of Africa, to the delight of children and parents alike. Boekehuis came to the party with a wide range of Maja’s and Rico’s books on sale, and copies of the The Kite’s Flight, in particular, sole like hot cakes. Maja’s framed original artworks and Rico’s latest book The Pothole at the end of the Rainbow (published by Jacana) were snapped up as perfect Christmas presents.
This was the second in the series of illustrator workshops hosted by the Alliance Francaise (the first one was put on by Janina Pechova, author and illustrator of The Little 5), and more are planned for next year – look out for Joan Rankin's, definitely a "not to be missed".
